heard the fundamental claim there. the president said he claimed 5 million jobs, mitt romney says not so much. in 2009, this is what the country looked like, everywhere you see a brown state, they were losing jobs in the first full year of barack obama's presidency. unemployment, 10.6%, but three years passed, we saw increases in retail, health care, education, and look at the map today. every state that becomes lighter in this picture is a state where there was an improvement in the unemployment rate over that period of time. i will tell you there, ray great many of them out here. the unemployment rate for ohio, changed 7.2%. lock at the massive change in the country in terms of the improvement in terms of states that are no longer losing jobs, but now making jobs. to make that happen, the bureau of labor statistics says you had to have a lot of job creation. 4.4 million jobs created. what you don't hear so much about, we lost 4.3 million jobs in the dark days. the net gain according to the net record, is only 125,000 jobs. based on that even though the president did create a lot of job

the candidates will do about unemployment. you just did a great piece on romney's economic advisers and who would staff him if he won the white house. when you were reporting that, what is their theory on how you create jobs? what would they do to make this unemployment number dive down in a way that jack welch would find more pleasant. >> what you hear a lot is a sense that the belief of the evidence to strengthen on the economy over the next couple of years, whether it's fiscal economy, those are sugar highs, short term things that might help a little in the short run but don't really help anything in the longer run. you have a theory that you try and fix things in the economy, get a more efficient tax code, get the deficit down over time. that that will help you. when you give them truth serum, you're talk and you off the record, the disruption might be tough for the first few months. but they would argue that the longer term, since we're on the right track would be worth it. that's not an argument you see in the debates. it's not the way the argument gets framed. but that's the core ideologic

>> live from america's election headquarters, governor mitt romney saying america is in a jobs crisis. this, as the obama campaign touts a new report showing the unemployment rate dropping to 7.8%. governor romney citing millions of americans forced into part-time jobs and many who have simply stopped looking for week. in his weekly internet address, president obama says the new report shows the country is headed in the right direction. and new video out of israel showing an israeli fighter jet shooting down an unmanned drone inside their air space. right now, investigators are searching the drone's wreckage in the southern part of the country and israeli media sources saying it was not carrying weapons, but appears to be gathering information. and we'll be back at 6 eastern alongside rick fulbaum. >> paul: welcome back to the journal, editorial report. coming up in this half hour, the supreme court is back in session and promising to be another tumultuous turn as it references racial preferences and college admissions. could it be a potential pickup of republicans in the blues
forewarned. >> reporter: romney said the unemployment rate fell because people gave up. >> when i'm president of the united states -- that, that unemployment rate is going to come down, not because people are giving up and dropping out of the workforce, but because we're creating more jobs. >> reporter: on social media, some conservatives accuse the obama administration of doctoring the jobs number. former general electric ceo jack welch wrote "unbelievable job numbers. the chicago guys will do anything. can't debate, so change the numbers. >> it's ludicrous to hear that kind of statement. >> reporter: secretary of labor denies any political motivations a saying the numbers are real. while romney launches tv ad as promising to do better than president obama. >> i have a detailed plan to create 12 million new jobs. >> reporter: obama is celebrating this report. >> this country has come too far to turn back now. >> reporter: a benchmark, he says, proves america is on the right track. economists say the number of new jobs being created is not enough to significantly lower the unemployment rate.
